Photoproduction of singlet oxygen from particulate organic matter

Elena Appiani has a paper that has just appeared online at Environmental Science and Technology on the photochemical production of singlet oxygen from particulate organic matter (POM). Her study shows that molecules that sorb to organic matter can be photochemically oxidized by POM-generated singlet oxygen. So be careful before filtering your sample and removing the particles before doing your experiment--especially if your compound has a log Koc value near 4. Read the paper to find out why!
